System boilers
Plenty of hot water for busier households
A system boiler heats your central heating directly and stores hot water in a cylinder, usually in an airing cupboard. The key heating components, such as the pump and expansion vessel, are built into the boiler itself, so there is no need for tanks in the loft.
Because hot water is stored ready to use, a system boiler can supply several taps and showers at the same time without the drop in flow you may get with a combi. Paired with an unvented cylinder, you also get mains pressure hot water throughout the house.
- Homes with two or more bathrooms
- Larger families with high hot water use
- Properties where several showers run at once
- Homes moving away from loft tanks
Ideal & Vaillant accreditedThe basics
How a system boiler works
Sealed heating circuit
The boiler heats water for your radiators in a sealed, pressurised system with no loft tanks.
Stored hot water
It also heats a cylinder of hot water, kept ready for taps, showers and baths.
Hot water to every outlet
Multiple bathrooms can draw hot water at once, with strong pressure from an unvented cylinder.
Honest advice
Is a system boiler right for you?
We will always recommend what is genuinely best for your home, even if that means a different type of boiler.
The benefits
- Supplies several bathrooms at the same time
- No cold water or feed tanks needed in the loft
- Mains pressure hot water when paired with an unvented cylinder
- Consistent performance for larger households
- Works well with solar thermal panels
Things to consider
- Needs space for a hot water cylinder
- Stored hot water can run out and takes time to reheat
- Installation is usually more involved than a combi swap

FAQs
System Boilers: your questions answered
What is the difference between a system boiler and a combi?
A combi heats water instantly from the mains and stores none. A system boiler heats water and stores it in a cylinder, so it can supply several taps and showers at once. Combis suit smaller homes; system boilers suit homes with more than one bathroom and higher hot water demand.
Does a system boiler need tanks in the loft?
No. A system boiler runs on a sealed, pressurised heating circuit with the main components built in, so loft tanks are not needed. You only need space for the hot water cylinder.
Should I have a vented or unvented cylinder?
A system boiler can work with either. An unvented cylinder is fed directly from the mains, giving stronger water pressure and freeing up the loft. We check your mains pressure and flow during the survey and recommend the best option.
Will I run out of hot water?
A system boiler supplies stored hot water, so a very heavy demand can use up the cylinder before it reheats. We size the cylinder to your household so that, in normal use, you have plenty of hot water when you need it.
How long does a system boiler installation take?
Replacing an existing system boiler like-for-like typically takes one to two days. Converting from a regular boiler, or adding a new cylinder, can take longer. We will confirm timescales with your quote.
Can I spread the cost of a new system boiler?
Yes. Flexible boiler finance is available on Ideal and Vaillant installations, subject to status and credit checks.
