Combi boilers
A compact boiler that heats water as you use it
A combination (combi) boiler provides both your central heating and your hot water from a single wall-mounted unit. It heats water straight from the mains the moment you turn on a tap, so there is no hot water cylinder to store and no cold water tank in the loft.
It is the most popular type of boiler in UK homes because it is efficient, takes up little space and is usually the simplest to install and maintain. At Flotech Heating & Plumbing Ltd, we install Ideal and Vaillant combi boilers across Bishop's Stortford and the surrounding areas, sized properly to your home and your hot water use.
- Flats and smaller to medium-sized homes
- Homes with one main bathroom
- Properties with good mains water pressure
- Anyone wanting to free up loft or cupboard space
Ideal & Vaillant accreditedThe basics
How a combi boiler works
Cold water in
Water comes straight from the mains supply. There is no storage tank to fill or keep warm.
Heated instantly
When you open a hot tap, the boiler fires up and heats the water as it passes through.
Heating on demand
The same boiler heats your radiators, controlled by your thermostat and timer.
Honest advice
Is a combi boiler right for you?
We will always recommend what is genuinely best for your home, even if that means a different type of boiler.
The benefits
- Hot water whenever you need it, with no waiting for a tank to heat
- No cylinder or loft tanks, freeing up valuable space
- Mains pressure hot water for a stronger shower
- Only heats the water you use, helping keep running costs down
- Usually the quickest and simplest type to install
Things to consider
- Running two showers at once splits the hot water flow
- Performance depends on your mains water pressure and flow rate
- Larger homes with several bathrooms may suit a system boiler better

FAQs
Combi Boilers: your questions answered
Is a combi boiler right for my home?
A combi usually suits homes with one main bathroom, or a bathroom plus an en-suite that are rarely used at the same time, and good mains water pressure. When we visit to quote, we check your water pressure and flow rate and talk through how your household uses hot water before recommending anything.
Can I run two showers at the same time with a combi?
A combi shares its hot water output between every tap that is open, so running two showers at once will reduce the flow to each. If your household regularly needs hot water in more than one place at a time, a system boiler with an unvented cylinder is often the better choice.
How long does a combi boiler installation take?
A like-for-like combi swap is typically completed in one day. If you are converting from a regular or system boiler, the extra pipework and removal of tanks usually takes two to three days. We will give you a clear timescale with your quote.
Do I need a power flush before a new combi is fitted?
Not always. Sludge and debris in older systems can damage a new boiler and reduce its efficiency, so we check the condition of your system water during the survey. If it needs cleaning, we will recommend a power flush and explain why.
Which combi boilers do you install?
We are Ideal and Vaillant accredited installers, so we recommend and fit combi boilers from both ranges, chosen to suit the size of your home and how much hot water you use.
Can I spread the cost of a new combi boiler?
Yes. Flexible boiler finance is available, so you can spread the cost into monthly payments. All finance is subject to status and credit checks.
